Step-by-Step Instructions for Char Siu Chicken
  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a large mixing bowl, combine the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, five-spice powder, minced garlic, grated ginger, and vegetable oil. Whisk until smooth. If desired, add red food coloring.
  2. Marinate the Chicken: Add chicken thighs to the marinade, coating them completely. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight.
  3. Preheat Your Cooking Equipment: Preheat your grill or oven to 400°F (200°C). Oil the grates if using a grill.
  4. Prepare the Chicken for Cooking: Remove chicken thighs from marinade, allowing excess to drip off. Reserve marinade for basting.
  5. Cook the Chicken: Grill or bake chicken for 25-30 minutes, basting every 10 minutes. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  6. Rest and Serve: Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with green onions and serve.
