Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
  4. Alternately add the flour mixture and sour cream to the butter-sugar mixture, mixing until just combined.
  5. Gently fold in the chopped apples into the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 45–50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool the cake in the pan for 15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  8. In a saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, and milk. Stir until boiling, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  9. Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until creamy, then frost the cooled cake.
