Equipment

  • 9-inch round cake tin
  • mixing bowls
  • whisk
  • spatula
  • Microwave-safe bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 160°C (fan) / 180°C (conventional) and line a 9-inch round cake tin with baking paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the caster sugar, self-raising flour, and cocoa powder. Whisk thoroughly to ensure no lumps remain.
  3. Add the vegetable oil, milk, eggs, and the zest and juice from the orange to the dry mixture. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the cake springs back when gently pressed in the center. Let it cool in the tin for 20 minutes.
  5. Prepare the buttercream by melting the chocolate in the microwave. In a bowl, beat the butter until fluffy, mix in icing sugar and melted chocolate, then add cocoa powder and boiling water for consistency.
  6. Once the cake is cool, spread the buttercream on top and sides. Decorate with chocolate buttons, Smarties, and pretzels.
