Ingredients

For the Bread Pudding
  • 10 cups Stale French Bread Any crusty bread can be used if French is not available.
  • 4 large Eggs Opt for fresh eggs to enhance flavor.
  • 2 cups Whole Milk Low-fat milk can be a substitute but may alter the pudding’s texture.
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream Half-and-half can be used for a lighter option.
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar Feel free to use brown sugar for a deeper caramel flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract Using pure vanilla extract will yield the best results.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Nutmeg can also be added for additional flavor depth.
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg Optional if a lighter spice is preferred.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt Balances sweetness and is essential for depth of flavor.
  • 0.5 cup Raisins Optional, can be replaced with chocolate chips or nuts.
For the Bourbon Sauce
  • 0.5 cup Bourbon Consider vanilla or caramel syrup as alternatives for a non-alcoholic version.

  • mixing bowls
  • spatula
  • Saucepan

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the stale French bread into 1-inch cubes and place them in a mixing bowl. Add raisins if using.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the cubed bread and gently fold until every piece is soaked.
  5. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  6. Transfer the bread pudding mixture into the greased baking dish and spread evenly for uniform baking.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes until golden brown and set.
  8. While the pudding is baking, melt together butter and sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, then whisk in cream and bourbon, cooking until thickened.
  9. Cool the bread pudding for 15 to 20 minutes before drizzling with warm bourbon sauce to serve.
