  • 1 medium Onion or shallots for milder flavor
  • 2 cloves Garlic or garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt divided
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika smoked for intense flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder or fresh
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder or fresh
  • 4 cups Russet Potatoes sliced into ¼-inch rounds
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese or Monterey Jack
  • 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese or provolone
  • 2 tablespoons Butter or margarine as dairy-free substitute
  • 1 cup Beef Broth or Water vegetable broth for non-meat option
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh Parsley for garnish

  • 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup for creamier texture
  • 1 cup Sliced Mushrooms
  • 1 cup Diced Bell Peppers

Method
 

Basic Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Gather all your ingredients and equipment.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until halfway cooked. Add onion and garlic, seasoning with salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder. Cook until beef is no longer pink.
  3. Peel and slice russet potatoes into ¼-inch rounds. Soak in cold water for 10 minutes, then pat dry.
  4. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter. Layer half of the potato slices, season with salt and pepper.
  5. Spread the cooked beef mixture over the potatoes, then layer the remaining potato slices on top.
  6. Dot with butter and pour beef broth or water around the edges.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
  8. Uncover, sprinkle cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is golden.
  9. Let rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.
